Inadmissible renovations
Before you begin, check if the renovations you want to do are eligible. The Canada Greener Homes Initiative helps Canadians improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Additions to existing homes are not eligible for incentives under the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, as these additions are considered a new section of the home. When renovations are being done as part of a home rebuild, please note that some renovations may not be eligible depending on the extent of the rebuild. It is recommended that you contact us for advice on the eligibility of planned renovations before starting the renovation work.
These renovations are not eligible
Special measures for northern and off-grid communities
We recognize that Canadians living in northern and off-grid communities face unique challenges when it comes to home renovations, including higher equipment and labour costs.
Eligible renovations
It is good practice, where safe, to take photographs during renovations to your home, especially for renovations that cannot be visually verified by the energy advisor, such as:
insulation hidden behind the new siding or covered by plasterboard
insulating a cathedral ceiling
resilience measures (such as roof membranes and waterproofing of basement walls).
Your energy advisor can give you more advice on how to take these photos. Please note that these photos do not replace the documentation required to be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative.

Isolation
The Canadian Greener Homes Initiative offers grants to homeowners to upgrade the insulation in their homes. Much like a thermos keeps your drink hot or cold, insulation keeps your home at the desired temperature by providing resistance to heat flow. Upgrading insulation is one of the easiest ways to make your home more energy efficient.
The effectiveness of an insulation material is determined by its ability to resist heat flow. Insulation resistance to heat flow is measured in RSI (metric) and R-value (imperial). The higher the R-value or RSI, the longer it takes for heat to escape through the insulation material. Recommendations for improving insulation and calculating your grant will be based on these values. Learn more about insulation materials .
Make sure the insulation material you choose has a tested R-value and is supported by documentation such as an official data sheet. Radiant insulation products (such as reflective bubble insulation, reflective paints, etc.) are often sold as having a very high insulation value; however, these radiant products are not governed by any standards, so be wary of manufacturers’ testimonials and claims regarding thermal performance.
All products and equipment must be purchased in Canada . Online purchases are only eligible if made from a distributor located in Canada.
